An exception to final devoicing

چکیده

All Dutch dialects — or, more generally, all West-Germanic dialects except English — display the effects of a process called final devoicing (FD), illustrated in (1) for standard Dutch: an underlyingly voiced obstruent devoices when it occurs at the end of a syllable. That the obstruent is underlyingly voiced can be seen in other morphological contexts, where it does not end the syllable. Thus in (1) there is a contrast between 'bathe', which has an underlying /t/, and 'bed' which has an underlying 'd', but the contrast only shows up when a vowel-initial plural suffix is added:

Factors affecting utterance-final vowel devoicing in spontaneous Japanese

Investigation of spontaneous speech corpora has shown that vowel devoicing in Japanese is a statistical phenomena. However, factors behind vowel devoicing have not been fully studied. In addition, there have been no studies that specifically examined pre-pausal vowel devoicing. In this paper, we investigate vowel devoicing in the pre-pausal position, in particular, vowel devoicing occurring at ...

Final Devoicing and the Stratification of the Lexicon in German 1. Final Devoicing in the Absolute Final Position 1.1 Data and Pre-ot Analyses

This paper examines German Final Devoicing in OT and shows that a full account of the data requires not only an explanation for Final Devoicing itself, but also a model of the stratification of the lexicon. The point of departure of this study is the observation that although various recently proposed analyses of German Final Devoicing in OT seem to make equally good predictions for the voicing...

How consonants, dialect and speech rate affect vowel devoicing?

We examined the glottal opening pattern during devoicing environment in Japanese, with respect to the factors that facilitate or suppress devoicing. The factors include consonantal environment, dialects, speech rate, consecutive devoicing environment and phrase final position. The results indicated that glottal opening patterns are twofold: a single phaseand a double phase opening for /CVC/. On...

Length and voicing in Friulian and Milanese Or why rule-free derivations are needed

This paper claims that phonology should express the relationship between vowel length and obstruent voicing operationally rather than in parallel. The empirical focus in on Friulian and Milanese. The distribution of vowel length in Friulian is predictable from the underlying laryngeal specification of obstruents. Stressed vowels are long before underlyingly voiced word-final obstruents although...

Final devoicing and vowel lengthening in the north of Italy: a representational approach

In this paper I present a novel approach to the phenomenon of length-related “final devoicing” in the Romance varieties of northern Italy. I propose a representational account of the facts, deriving vowel lengthening from the interplay of constraints regulating word-final delaryngealization and weight-by-position constraints targeting only laryngeally specified obstruents. As Repetti (1992) sho...
